Dixie Chicks' Maines Says U.S. President Owed 'No Respect Whatsoever'
Sunday, May 21, 2006

NEW YORK  — The Dixie Chicks' Natalie Maines apologized for disrespecting President George W. Bush during a London concert in 2003. But now, she's taking it back.
"I don't feel that way anymore," she told Time magazine for its issue hitting newsstands Monday. "I don't feel he is owed any respect whatsoever."
As war in Iraq loomed in 2003, Maines told the London audience: "Just so you know, we're ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas."
The remarks led to death threats and a backlash from other U.S. country stars, including a high-profile spat with Toby Keith. It also stalled what until then had been the group's smashingly successful career.
Bandmate Emily Robinson said she knew right away the remark wouldn't be taken lightly and got "hot from my head to my toes."
"It wasn't that I didn't agree with her 100 percent; it was just, 'Oh, this is going to stir something up,"' she told Time magazine.
For band member Martie Maguire, the controversy was a blessing in disguise."I'd rather have a small following of really cool people who get it, who will grow with us as we grow and are fans for life, than people that have us in their five-disc changer with Reba McEntire and Toby Keith," Maguire said. "We don't want those kinds of fans. They limit what you can do."
The Chicks' hits include "Landslide," "Goodbye Earl" and "Wide Open Spaces." Their new album, "Taking the Long Way," is due out May 23. The first single is "Not Ready to Make Nice."

Iran now has the nukes it needs to wipe out Israel

And all the rest of us. I'm sure we can work this out diplomatically, though. There's no need for a backup plan in case that doesn't work. I'm sure any national leader who believes that the Holocaust did not exist won't actually plan to use these nukes on anyone, so we have no reason to worry. And now, I am removing my tongue from my cheek and engaging my brain.

Hugh Hewitt's site had an interview with Mark Steyn (that I can no longer FIND dammit but here's a link to an article describing the highlights of our relationship with Iran on Steyn's site ) said:
Anyone who spends half an hour looking at Iranian foreign policy over the last 27 years sees five things:
- contempt for the most basic international conventions;
- long-reach extraterritoriality;
- effective promotion of radical Pan-Islamism;
- a willingness to go the extra mile for Jew-killing (unlike, say, Osama);
- an all-but-total synchronization between rhetoric and action.
Yet the Europeans remain in denial. Iran was supposedly the Middle Eastern state they could work with. And the chancellors and foreign ministers jetted in to court the mullahs so assiduously that they’re reluctant to give up on the strategy just because a relatively peripheral figure like the, er, head of state is sounding off about Armageddon.

This country is clearly a threat to the rest of the world. What, legitimately, can be done with a leader who declares hatred for others? I could care less what others do in their own countries so long as they don't mess with me or harm their own citizens. Realistically, how many other countries actually fit into this description? How can the spread of democracy be a bad thing when the alternative is "government" such as Iran's? How many Churchills (Winston, not Ward) will we ignore while millions are killed in the meantime?

To the Immigrants:

I welcome you to my country. I welcome you just as others welcomed my ancestors, as they arrived, paperwork in hand, through Ellis Island. They did not come to create a "little Denmark" here in the US. They came to leave behind an old way of life that was no longer satisfactory to them and to espouse a new culture that they believed would be so much more.

They did not climb through wires in the cover of night; they did not slip into a harbor under cover when no one was looking. Nor did they march the streets in protest until they were permitted admittance. They paid their dues and they became Americans.

My ancestors struggled to learn the English language. No special tutors were employed for my father as he struggled in his schoolwork to do the same, yet he learned the language and so did his parents. He did not get a free college education. He worked his way through school setting pins in a bowling alley. Sometimes he had no money and lived on the leftover bowling alley peanuts for days at a time.

This story could describe not only my ancestors, but the ancestors of most current American citizens.

Contrary to what you may believe, you do not have the right to infiltrate my homeland and demand that I pay for your lifestyle, your medical care, your legal bills, and the (special) education of your children. You do not have the right to operate motor vehicles illegally and cause my insurance rates to rise. You do not have the right to jobs and housing whilst US citizens remain unemployed.

If there is another country in the world who allows just anyone inside its borders without first signing in, without question, I would like to know what country it it.

I welcome you, but not as Mexicans. I welcome you as Americans, once you arrive within the bounds of current law.

U.S. Soldier Gets the Surprise of His Life

U.S. Soldier Gets the Surprise of His Life

Good friends are priceless. Spc. Bob Metcalf, an Indiana National Guard soldier who spent a year in Mosul, Iraq, knows this firsthand. During his homecoming he was greeted with a new car--but one unlike any other.
Long ago, Metcalf, 39, purchased a rusted 1967 Plymouth Barracuda that he planned to fix up someday. While he was off fighting for his country, his friends back home secretly did all the work and came up with the needed cash for parts, transforming that junk heap into a deep blue, chrome-trimmed car lover's dream, reports The Associated Press. They called the project "one soldier's dream."
To present the car to him last month, Metcalf's buddies invited him to the Cavalcade of Wheels auto show in South Bend, Ind. The shiny car that now sports red and white stripes was under a spotlight. That was when they sprung the surprise and told him the car was his old Barracuda. "I don't believe it. This is incredible," he said as a crowd of dozens of volunteers and cameras watched him. They gave him the keys and told him to start the engine--a hot-rodded Chrysler 318 V-8.bilde2.jpeg

Why people are poor

Are people in this country really poor?

Compare our poor to the poor in India, or China, or Africa.

We can at least get health care if we are dying. We don't lie in a gutter covered in flies. We can trot down to the local food bank; they must scrounge through sewage and garbage in said gutters. I could go on -

But more importantly is - WHY are we poor? Let's take an acquaintance of mine. She has no real job, but works part-time handing out samples in grocery stores. Her live-in partner owns the trailer they live in. He is on some kind of disability, I think because he has lost vision in one eye, but can still ride their expensive motorcycles. He has filed bankruptcy, but still has a home, a truck, and 2 motorcycles. Nice ones, as I see it. They get free health care on an Indian reservation because he is part native of some tribe, yet she bitches about not having health insurance. She sold some property and paid off a few of their bills, then promptly ran her CC's back up buying a big-screen TV and some new living room furniture. I don't have motorcycles, a big screen TV, or new living room furniture - mine came from an estate sale after we moved here.

They own some kind of timeshare; we vacation a day at a time by going diving locally for the cost of gas and gas. They got a free cruise with their timeshare, then couldn't afford to pay the port taxes so weren't able to use it. She bitches about the pollution and global warming, yet sees no issues with the cruise ship industry - or with taking pleasure trips on a motorcycle - with dozens of others - isn't there a bit of greenhouse gas emitted there?

Cruise ships. A rant for another day........

Saddam's Trial

I was thinking today that all the American politicians who are crying that the war was illegal and unjust have just created Saddam's defense for him.

We've Totally Missed the Lesson

This will be my only post on Katrina.

Firstly, I am aching deeply for all those who lost loved ones, homes, pets, jobs, health, whatever in this disaster.

Next. It is not President Bush's fault that they lost everything. They WERE told to get OUT and did not.

Many could not get out, they say. So how tough is this:
An emergency evacuation is declared by the President. Governors call every school superintendent and tell them to prepare their bus routes and run them as many times as needed to collect everyone. Take them to the nearest busline or train and get them OUT. And let them take pets on leashes or in carriers.

There are sick people in shelters who need medication but they don't know the name of the medication. Hello! Aren't we advised to have copies of prescriptions and extra on hand?

And isn't it prudent to keep at least a week's worth of bottled water and food on hand?

I realize that this would not have saved everyone; but many would have been a great deal more comfortable had they taken the initiative to be more prepared.

Others will go on to say they did not have the money to put supplies by. One man who complained about this was managing to smoke a cigarette as he spoke to the media.

There was a huge lack of planning for this kind of disaster, no question about it, on every level from the individual to the federal government. We need to clean it up, strengthen out plans, and move forward.

Speaking of planning and rebuilding......

Why should we rebuild New Orleans at its present below-sea level? It's already become a modern-day Atlantis. Why risk this again? Reimbursement for homes through FEMA should always carry restrictions about rebuilding on flood plains, dunes, earthquake faults, hills prone to mudslides, etc. Go figure.

I've donated to the families in need and signed up to house a small family for 2 months - anyone who wants to relocate to this area.

Listen up, America. Any of us can lose everything in a heartbeat. Realize that, and prepare yourself at every level. Now is too late.

Rant over.

Make up your mind!

Am I correct that the same folks who think those of us who drive SUV's are evil are the same people who oppose nuclear power as a valid energy source? Which is it? Do we need alternatives to fossil fuel or not? Make up your minds.

I don't get it.

Just for giggles, I have been listening to Air America for the past few days. I've heard pretty much nothing but bashing and hatred , mostly directed toward our government. This is a stark contrast to right-wing stations, who slam, if they do slam at all, terrorists. I'm not talking the liberals here, like Michael Savage, for the record. Occasionally they take potshots at the idiots who take potshots at the military.

Soldiers are incredible gentlemen, or those who belittle their jobs would be mincemeat.

If I have to side with someone, who am I going to side with: the government of my country, or those who support muslim extremists? How much thought does it take to make that decision? I'm appalled that most of the democratic party cannot make that decision reasonably.

Cindy Sheehan was asked by a reporter, "What about those Iraqis who want the US to remain and help them builld their government?"

She replied, "I think we can leave and certainly work out something without having to have our military there."

Perhaps she would like to volunteer to be on the committee to make friends with those who killed her son?

According to current polls, it is likely a democratic president will be elected next. I'm glad we have a few years to get our lives and affairs in order before this happens, and prepare for the worst case. I do fear we will have to hit rock bottom before any turnaround can occur.

Cindy, go home!

You have no clue why we are fighting this war. You've infringed upon the rights and privacy of President Bush's neighbors. Your husband is divorcing you. You are prostituting yourself to the likes of George Soros. Your objection to our presence in Iraq is gaining enough publicity to show your support of the terrorists who would love nothing more than for us to come home. You're putting hundreds of thousands of other people at risk with this show of support as attacks worsen. Most importantly, you've made a mockery of your son. Initially, I was sympathetic to your regarding the loss of your son. Now, I just want you to shut up, go home, and get the counseling you need to go on.

How American Are you?

http://www.blogthings.com/howamericanareyouquiz/

I got 80% and am disappointed:

You're as American as red meat and shooting ranges.
Tough and independent, you think big.
You love everything about the US, wrong or right.
And anyone who criticizes your home better not do it in front of you!

Catching terrorists in London

yup. they caught them all, already.

How?

From images taken from surveillance cameras around London. And they don't even need a patriot act to get the images. And the English citizens are not complaining.

Why do Americans have to object to everything, just because they can?
