Things a student in my class should NEVER do
1. If I ask you to stop talking, just stop
talking. Do not say, "But I just had to ask Ashley a question," "I was just
asking Josh about the lab report," and most of all do not say "But I wasn't
talking." I do not care why you were talking. I only want you to stop talking,
so JUST STOP TALKING.
2. Do not
disturb my class if you arrive tardy. Just sign the tardy book and sit down.
3. I do not riffle through your
backpack, so do not touch anything on my desk. No you may not "see" my pens,
pencils, computer, laptop, the photos of my family, or my coffee. If you need
materials you may get them from the drawer by the lab tables.
4. Do not argue. This is not a
democracy; it is a dictatorship. It is not necessarily a benevolent
dictatorship, either.
5. Do not
announce your grade loudly to the class, especially if it is not a very high
grade.
6. Do not ask if we are having
a "free day." We are not, nor will we ever.
7. Neglect to submit assignments for
a few weeks, then ask for "extra" credit. (What does "extra"
mean?????)
8. Ask for help in lab by
saying "I don't know what to do." The response will be to read your procedure,
then ask a specific question.
9. Do
work for another class while in my class. I will own that work, and will own
you for 45 minutes after school. Same goes if you do work for my class in
someone else's class.
10. If something makes you giggle for more
than 10 seconds, you should assume you are NOT allowed to do it.
11. No, I will not teach you how to
build a bomb. in fact, if you ask, I will call the police on you.
12. Do not ask me simple questions
that were answered on the syllabus at the beginning of the year. You should have
read it. An example would be "what is your e-mail address?"
13. Do not say "There is a test
today?" when you had more than enough time to prepare for said test. What would
be better to say is "I studied so hard for the test last night." Even though it
is a lie, it makes us feel better about our
job.
14. Announce loudly, "I don't
understand ANY of this." I can assign reading for you. I can show you how to
get the most out of your textbook reading time. I can show you relationships
and connections and examples. I can explain in my words. I can provide
opportunities for you to discuss the concepts with your friends. I can show you
how to ask the questions you need to ask to help yourself understand. I cannot,
however, place an immediate comprehension of complex concepts into your head
with no effort from you. You have to do your part too.
